Buy the television with the best panel and tone mapping in your budget, then confirm that Dolby Vision works on the inputs and frame rates you intend to use. The badge comes second because it identifies format support, not peak luminance, black level, blooming control or picture accuracy.

Dolby Vision is an advanced form of HDR that can carry dynamic metadata, allowing compatible material to provide scene-level or frame-level guidance rather than one fixed instruction for an entire programme. That flexibility can preserve highlight detail and darker darks, but the television still has to turn those instructions into light. Start with the room. An OLED is the straightforward choice for a dark living room because each pixel can switch off, giving films deep blacks without halos around subtitles or stars. A bright mini-LED LCD is usually the better decision for daytime sport, windows opposite the screen or sustained light output. It can deliver brighter brights, though local-dimming zones may produce blooming in difficult scenes.

Peak brightness is useful, but a single laboratory number is not the whole viewing experience. A set may hit an exceptional highlight briefly while dimming a large bright scene, or hold moderate luminance more consistently. Look for measurements covering small highlights, larger windows and full-screen output. Prioritise black level in controlled light and sustained luminance in a sunlit room.

Tone mapping is the second filter. Good processing retains texture in clouds, lamps and reflections while keeping faces and shadow detail believable. Is a Dolby Vision TV 55 inch or 65 inch model the better fit?

Choose 55 inches at roughly 6 to 8 feet and 65 inches at roughly 8 to 10 feet, then adjust for eyesight, room layout and how much 4K material you watch. If both sizes fit and the larger model does not force you into a worse panel series, buy 65 inches.

Screen size changes immersion more directly than small differences between adjacent model years. At normal seating distances, a larger 4K screen makes fine detail easier to see and gives shows, movies and games more presence. Sit too far away and much of the resolution advantage disappears.

Model names can deceive here. A 55-inch version and a 65-inch version carrying the same family name may use different panels, different numbers of dimming zones or a different stand arrangement. Check a review of the exact size, not merely the series. This matters especially with value LCD lines where manufacturers can source panels from more than one supplier.

Measure the furniture as well as the wall. Confirm the width between stand feet, the depth of the base and the clearance for a soundbar. The phrase “HDMI 2.1” is not a sufficient shopping test. Check the supported signal combinations directly: 3840 by 2160 at 120 Hz, VRR range, chroma support, eARC allocation and the number of full-bandwidth ports. A native 120 Hz panel is worth paying for if you own compatible gaming devices, play competitive titles or prefer the motion available from high-frame-rate input. For films, broadcast television and ordinary online video, a good 60 Hz set can still look excellent. Motion interpolation is not the same thing as accepting a genuine 120 Hz signal.

Use a certified cable appropriate to the required bandwidth, particularly for long runs through a wall. Format availability is part of the decision because HDR ecosystems are not identical. Some television brands support Dolby Vision, others emphasise HDR10+, and many services offer a mixture of Dolby Vision, HDR10 and standard dynamic range depending on the title, subscription tier and playback hardware. The television will still display ordinary HDR10, so absence of one optional dynamic format does not make the screen unusable.

Check the apps and external devices you actually use. Dolby Vision may be available from a built-in app but not from an older HDMI source, or a receiver may fail to pass the required signal.
