Android keeps file handlers, system roles, and verified web links in different settings, so the correct reset depends on what is being opened.

How do you reset the app currently opening the file?

Clear that app’s defaults. On most Android versions, go to your device settings, open Apps, select the app currently handling the file, then open Open by default and tap Clear defaults.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
  3. Select See all apps if the complete list is hidden.
  4. Tap the application that opens the file now, such as Google Drive, Photos, or a PDF reader.
  5. Tap Open by default or Set as default.
  6. Tap Clear defaults or Clear default preferences.

The wording changes by Android version and device maker. On some phones, go to Settings > Apps > App management, choose the app, and open its default settings from there. If Clear defaults is disabled, that app has no ordinary file association stored, so return to the file manager and check whether its own Open with menu can select another application.

Do not tap Clear storage. That removes the app’s local data and account state rather than merely resetting which files it handles, a distinction covered in what clearing Android app data changes.

How do you choose a different app for the file?

Open the file again. After the old association is cleared, Android should display a chooser containing applications whose declared intent filters match that file type, rather than every installed app.

  1. Return to Files, Files by Google, Gmail, Google Drive, or the application containing the file.
  2. Tap the file.
  3. Select the desired app from the chooser.
  4. Tap Just once to keep the prompt, or Always to make that app the new default.

Pick Just once first. It confirms that the desired app can actually read the PDF, image, audio track, or document before Android stores another persistent choice.

If no chooser appears, tap the file’s three dots menu and look for Open with. A missing desired app usually means the application has not declared support for that MIME type or content URI; Android routes files through the documented intent and app chooser system, so changing a preference cannot make an incompatible app appear.

A file manager can also interfere. Try opening the same file from Files by Google or from the app that downloaded it, because one source may expose a share action while another sends an open action.

How do you change which app opens a file on Samsung?

Use Set as default. On a current Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings > Apps, select the existing application, tap Set as default, and press Clear defaults before reopening the file.

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the app that currently opens the file.
  3. Tap Set as default.
  4. Tap Clear defaults.
  5. Return to My Files and open the file again.
  6. Select the replacement app, then tap Just once or Always.

If the wrong app is hard to identify, open Settings > Apps > Choose default apps. That screen manages broad roles such as Browser app, Phone app, and SMS app, but it may not list a PDF or archive association because Android often records those against the individual handler.

Samsung also exposes Opening links under default-app settings. Use that menu for web addresses claimed by installed applications, since verified links follow a separate mechanism from ordinary local files under Android’s App Links model.

FAQ

Why is the Clear defaults button greyed out?
The app does not currently hold a standard Android default that can be cleared from that screen. Open the file manager’s three dots menu and try Open with, then check Default apps or Opening links if the item being opened is a web address.
Can I set different apps for different PDF files?
Android normally assigns the default by file or link type, not by individual filename. Choose Just once when you need to alternate between PDF applications, or use each app’s Open command rather than storing one as Always.
Will clearing defaults delete files or sign me out?
No. Clear defaults removes the saved opening preference, while Clear storage or Clear data resets the application’s local state and may sign you out.
Why does my preferred app not appear under Open with?
The app probably does not advertise support for that file type or for the way the source application shares it. Update the app, try opening the file from another file manager, and confirm that the file has a recognizable extension such as .pdf, .jpg, or .mp3.
